Languedoc – Roussillon – The southern region is bordered by the Mediterranean on one side and the Pyrénées on the other. It stretches from the Spanish border up to Provence. It is well known as one of France’s sunniest regions. The five departments are Gard (30 – Nîmes),  Hérault ( 34 – Montpellier), Lozère (48 – Mende), Aude (11 – Carcassonne) and Pyrénées-Orrientales (66 – Perpignan).  The main cities include Montpellier, Perpignan, Carcassonne, Béziers and Nîmes 

Climate: With an average of 310 sunny days a year the area is ideal for year round holidays. Spring comes early with almond blossom and wild flowers in profusion. Summers are long and sunny heralded by the song of the cigale. The sleepy atmosphere of the country villages contrasting sharply with the lively bustle of the coastal resorts. The season of colour, oleanders, roses, geraniums, the market stalls piled high with peaches, apricots and melons. Late summer brings the grape harvest and almonds and figs are ready for picking. Autumn with its gentle sun brings a wonderful change of colour to the vineyards. The green leaves turning to vibrant shades of red, orange and gold making a "patchwork quilt" of the landscape. Winters are short and mild with deep blue skies, spectacular sunsets, flowering mimosas and olives ripening on the trees.

Local Information: Carcassonne is a Walled Town is a MUST. Look out for the large FIREWORKS DISPLAY at Le Citi (old city) You are advised to be there early, but leave the car well away from the city limits as the traffic after the display gets grid locked. This spectacular sight on Bastile day - must be seen to be believed. Thousands of people will be there. BEST VIEW is from the old arched bridge looking towards the main street and Old City. Sit on the bridge wall. It starts about 2030 hrs on or around the 14th of July. FANTASTIC but be warned about the traffic. GOUFFRE GEANT de CABRESPINE This cave is a huge single cavern, 80 Mtrs long and 220 Mtrs high, which is as high as the Eiffel Tower. Apart from guided tours an extended tour off the normal tourist section is also available. It lasts for five hours and takes place throughout the year. Margon: Château de Margon, mentioned from the early start of 11th century, the 3 towers of the castle are dated from 13th century. This splendid feudal castle is the most best preserved in Hérault region. Perched on a hillock, it is surrounded by the medieval village which is articulated in circle.The castle was separated from it's garden by a broad ditch until 13th centuary, the lord of the time made arrange a system of arches (rue des Banastes) accompanied by terraces and a double staircase, so to be able to go down easily in the garden directly from the terraces of the castle. Do not forget to visit the church of Margon located in the village circle, all beside the castle.Margon has a village shop, bar, hotel and restaurants. Sallèles d'Aude is a beautiful village on the Canal de Jonction, which was created to link the Canal du Midi and the river Aude. Built on a former Roman settlement, it is surrounded by some of the oldest vineyards in the world. The village has many amenities - shops, restaurants and museums. Situated on the edge of the village, this light and airy gîte is only 2 minutes walk from the canal. It is attached to the owners' house and is approx 75m² in size. It has one bedroom which sleeps 2 and there is a sofa bed in the sitting room. The comfortably furnished living/dining area leads into the fully equipped kitchen. The gîte opens via patio doors on to a private terrace and small enclosed garden - approx 8m x 15m.

Local Information: The picturesque village of Sallèles d'Aude is an ideal base from which to explore the many museums, abbeys and historical sites of the area. Canigou (2,784m), Sahorre offer's visitors a friendly welcome to this thriving village of 300 people and is an ideal base for exploring or just relaxing. The apartment is on the ground floor and has its own private entrance and has ample off road private parking. The British owners who live full time at the house can offer help and information about the area and places to visit. Local Information: Sahorre offers its visitor's local shops (Butchers/Presse/Tabac, Boulangerie, Gen. A 5 min. drive takes you to the small beautiful Spa town of Vernet les Bain which provides a local supermarket, Thermal Baths, Casino, Night Club, Pharmacy, Restaurants, public swimming baths, and with 3 market days a week.
